Neither I nor my husband were born in the UK, so being pregnant for the first time in a country away from family felt a bit scary even though we were so excited to grow our own family. Although my husband never heard of a doula, I knew I wanted one from day one. We feel lucky that we found Helena, she was open minded, caring, informative and helped me to realise the power I had both internally as well as externally in decisions I had control over or could influence in relation to my pregnancy and birth. I can’t put into words how helpful she was, it was like having a good friend, encyclopedia of birth, and helpful courses database all wrapped into one! In the end our little girl was breech so I opted for a C-section, but the support we had from Helena throughout the pregnancy and after birth was so helpful that we wouldn’t have changed a thing. Should we be blessed with another addition to our family someday she will definitely be our first choice again.
