Great hiking area near Gillenfeld. There are of course more maares(inactive vulcano craters) very close to Gillenfeld.

Lovely spot. Amazing to swim in a natural volcanic lake. The lake is warm late summer. Also hired a boat on the lake. 8 euro per hour.

A very pleasant and sheltered location just outside of Gillenfeld. Woven through with walking and cycling trails it's a great base from which to get out and enjoy the clean Eifel air. The name, Pulvermaar (engl. Powder Maar), indicates a lake which has formed in a coneless volcanic crater. There are many such Maars in the Eifel, and all can be very inviting. But be aware, they can also be very deep, and thus very cold. Brrr!
