I first stayed in Kyoto directly opposite Kyogoku Kane-yo some 9 years ago wondering what this ancient blackened looking shopfront across the road was selling - I was mesmerized and was determined to get in. Unfortunately they didn't open that time, but many years later I'm back looking for an unagi fix and here I am. Other places around Kyoto will give you the royal treatment with una-don in a lacquered box - it is expensive, a luxury, and you'll wonder if the price point is right. Kaneyo is a una-don specialist with 100 years of history, and except for taking credit cards they haven't changed the way they do business very much, ending up comparatively more affordable than the fancy ones closer to Gion. Delicious dishes too: umaki - baby eel in a blanket of omelette, grilled eel wrapped around burdock root, unagi kimoyaki - eel liver skewer (super delicious! Possibly better than the actual eel), unakinshi - an eel topped with bowl retopped with a blanket of omelette. They feel like a cosy family rather than professional staff, I love this place.

Food is alright. What irritates me is that smoking is actually allowed in the (indoor & air conditioned) dining area - definitely a NO-NO.

It's very quiet here. The unagi was great. I enjoyed it. For a second I forgot I was Kyoto. If you need a quiet place to eat, I would recommend this. It definitely has an old charm to it.

Decent Unagi but a bit pricey. Unagi and Kinshi Donburi are the main ones which come with 3 pieces of Unagi and 2 pieces of Unagi and egg respectively. If you need to travel more than 10 - 15 mins to get there, maybe I would consider any closer options. If you follow my ratings, 2 stars will be good but I wouldn't die to go back, 3 stars means will go back there again, 4 is def a must go place and 5, I wonder where it would be :)

I am not a fan of unagi but was impressed here. The unagi are soft, juicy, and come with a light charcoal smell. The rice and thick cut fried egg are really the perfect combination with the unagi. Yea a bit pricy but worth trying
