The negative reviews were strange. Yes this restaurant is pricier. Recommend going lunchtime or order smart to get bang for your bucks, most vegan restaurants these days do cost more than non vegan ones. Look at the menu items to figure out what you like. All the stuff I ordered were very good. I don't venture out to order stuff that I don't enjoy eating at home. Again, I like the place. The location is great. The decor is interesting.

This place is really good if you know what to get. The mixed tempura is light and delicious and the seaweed salad comes with four different varieties, all superb. Split a bottle or sake with a friend and you have the recipe for a great dinner that won't leave you feeling like crap.
They are great about gluten free, vegan and vegetarian options-- and having those options available are part of their philosophy. Their portions are solidly medium for any fish related dishes. They have generous portions of veggies on the plate. Good assortment of refreshing teas as well.
Good restaurant to go if you want a very healthy meal. I had what they call "the box", which is a plate that comes with tofu, algae, pickles, root vegetables and brown rice. And you choose your sauce and it comes with a small bowl of miso soup. It was good but pretty bland. I used all the sauce I had. As other mentioned, it's not the place to bring someone that is new to vegetarianism. It's still a pretty good place to eat if you want a healthy macrobiotic meal. It's not a vegetarian restaurant - they serve fish.
Years back, Souen was an elegant, Japanese well-mannered place of ease and gentle grace. Today it has changed ownership and so has the quality. My dinner was served 45 minutes late, the food was cold and they never bothered to clear the table until called. The quality of food is not good; service worse, and table manners of the servers even more concerning. all of the table settings have been removed, the tamari, gomashio, etc.
Rude! I arrived with my dining partner 3 blocks away. Manager would not let me look at menu ripping it from my hand. I took another and asked to order wine and appetizer. She said I could not be seated without my friend. She would not let me sit at bar and move my food and drink to table when he arrived. Don't manage a restaurant if you cannot treat people with dignity.
This is a wonderful place with great and creative food. It is especially helpful to anyone with gluten or nightshade allergies. The staff is friendly, the service is fast, and you can get everything to go.
Delicious and innovative menu. We also had a very friendly and health conscious waitress. Very knowledgeable with health food and gave us great service.
