This beautiful basilica is the burial place of Pius IX (r. 1846-78), the longest-reigning pope.

The Basilica is one of the 7 pilgrim churches of Rome and one of the five former \patriarchal basilicas\. The Basilica was assigned to the patriarchate of Jerusalem. The Basilica houses the tomb of St Lawrence one of the first seven deacons of Rome who was martyred in 258. The basilica has undergone a lot of changes from the first oratory built here by emperor Constantine himself. The crypt is also worth visiting . It houses also the tomb of St Stephen.
Inside the basilica is much bigger than it seems from outside as the sides are hidden behind the walls of the Verano Cemetery. Watch the time as the basilica suddenly closed at 12pm without warning and we almost got locked in!! In the crypt below the altar is the grate on which St. Laurence was supposedly burnt to death.
Old and has nice paintings
Lovely and Serene. Not really a destination, but good if nearby.
